Choosing an Education Stream- Common mistakes to avoid

Posted on January 10, 2022 by Admin

Completion of secondary school is an important milestone in the academic journey of a student. One of the first steps towards career planning includes the selection of the right education stream. This has a direct bearing on the career pathways that will open up after senior secondary education (or 10+2). Lack of awareness at this stage can lead to incorrect decisions. Let us examine some of the common mistakes made while choosing the field of study after completion of Class 10.

  • Academic performance - Grades or marks is one of the indicators that identify the aptitude of a student. However, it is not the sole factor that should drive the choice of field of study. For example, a good number of students score well in languages and humanities in comparison to mathematics. The high score may be a measure of the interest or aptitude of the student. It could also be due to the fact that these subjects are easier to understand. Apart from the grades, a comprehensive analysis of the interest and aptitude of the student is also necessary for selection of the education stream.

  • Peer and parental pressure - Parents play a huge role as facilitators in career choices. In a dynamic educational environment, they need to be aware of thevarious options that match their child’s interest and strengths.Choosing science after 10th with intent to pursue safe and popular options like engineering, medicine or law may not work if there is a mismatch of aptitude.Children should not be put under pressure to follow the footsteps of their parents or be a part of the family business if it does not align with their goals or interests.

The same reasoning applies when it comes to advice from peers. What's good for the goose is good for the gander is not applicable when it comes to career planning. One need not pursue the same course/profession as siblings or friends.

  • Stream Selection - There is a common misconception that the science stream is the best available option and professional careers like engineering, medicine and law guarantee success. It is important to remember that the society has successful people from all walks of life. There are eminent scientists who have made excellent contributions through their research; performing artists who have attained global recognition; armed service professionals who have made the country proud and so on. Success is dependent on passion towards the subject and not on the education stream. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

  • Choice of subjects - The next important step after zeroing in on an education stream is the choice of subjects. These should be carefully selected to align with future professional goals. For example, Biology is a good choice of subject (and mostly mandatory) for pursuing careers in healthcare or life sciences. Likewise, study of mathematics is required to take up the Architecture course. Failure to do due diligence will result is not satisfying the eligibility requirements for entrance tests and/or admissions.

  • Understanding of the profession - There are pros and cons associated with every profession. A doctor’s profession requires years of study especially if post graduate specialization is pursued. Perseverance is an essential attribute for a career in law. Patience and empathy are key qualities for a nurse. Physical fitness and ability to adapt are important for a career in the Armed Forces. Understanding the profession and its requirements will help in arriving at the right decision.

  • Going after lucrative and glamorous careers - Careers in the Entertainment Industry, Merchant Navy and Aviation (Flight Attendant/Pilot) may appear as both glamorous and lucrative options. Professionals in these areas should have the ability to be away from home for extended periods of time and be willing to work in flexible shifts.

A career in IT is one of the most sought after options due to excellent demand and remuneration. But it may not be your cup of tea. It is unwise to choose a career based on the pay package.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS. MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION.
